Invasive Species: Eurasian Watermilfoil Management

The Commission has helped lead community efforts to manage Eurasian Watermilfoil since the noxious plant was first discovered in the Lake in 1985. The Commission currently operates an annual Eurasian Watermilfoil Management Program. Each year every location where invasive milfoil has ever been recorded is searched. Small milfoil colonies are removed by hand harvesting. In this way the Commission clears up to 80% of the recorded sites each year. Repeated hand harvesting can eliminate all milfoil from a location but re-introduction from other locations is possible.

The program outputs are presented in The Eurasian Watermilfoil Program Annual Report and Historical Milfoil Site Densities Map. (Caution: these are large files)

Citizens can help by reporting suspected Eurasian Watermilfoil locations to the Commission. Please contact the Commission office at 518-668-9347.

The Commission partners in this important program with the Fund for Lake George Inc, Lake George Association and other groups and municipalities.
